4 Cardinal Points Tour

15 nights

Uruguay is a small country in Southern South America. It is approximately 600 kilometers wide and 600 long. In this small territory come together many different environments; the Pampas from Argentina, the Atlantic Forest from Brazil, wetlands, ocean coasts, countless rivers, grasslands, ravines and range of hills, palm tree forests, and many others. This particularity results in a great diversity of bird species that can be seen easily, in a short time, and in short distances. The territory is also an important feeding and breeding destination for many migrant species that come in summer and winter, from North and South of the continent. On the other hand, Uruguay is underexplored by science; biologists are still finding new species of flora and fauna. Many new bird records have taken place since the last years until now.

On this tour you will visit the most important hotspots for birdwatching. Every National Park and the majority of the Important Bird Areas in Uruguay are included in this itinerary. Two of the principal 13 destinations on this tour are recently explored by science: Rincón de Franquía and Paso del Centurión are relatively new protected areas where biologists are still researching on flora and fauna. Many new bird species have been recorded in these areas since the last 3 years until now, what have increased the number of bird species recorded to Uruguay. The small village of Paso del Centurión hadn´t run water or electricity until the year 2017. There isn’t any hotel in the area, that is why we will stay at 100 Km, in the Capital City of Melo. On the other hand, Rincón de Franquía is surrounded by agricultural fields on the Uruguayan side and by another protected area on the Brazilian side; Espinilhos State Park. The only accommodation is found in Bella Unión, a small Uruguayan city a few kilometers to South. The rest of the locations on this tour are more popular and accommodations are much closer to the birding spots and away from the cities. In every hotel you will get WiFi, A/C and delicious food, including vegetarian options. By the end of the tour can be seen over 250 bird species of the 455 recorded to Uruguay.
