Huelva’s mining area.
The river Odiel is the longest in Huelva province with 150 kilometres. The source is located in Sierra de Aracena and the mouth by Huelva City where the Odiel and the river Tinto confluent off to enter the Atlantic.
The gold and silver of Huelva’s mines attracted Phoenicians, Greeks and then Romans to the mythical land of Tartessus. This millennial mining activity has transformed the river as well as the environment, staining the water and the rocky slopes where it goes through with red, yellow and green colours.
